On Campus Design Event: Lara McCormick Skype Lecture

I attended a skype lecture with Lara McCormick, author of "Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments For Exploring Typographic Design Principles."

What is the event about?
The event mainly focused on her book "Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments For Exploring Typographic Design Principles."

What are some main points that struck you?
She mentioned that her students were only allowed two typefaces to work with their first few years.  And that even when they were given freedom they stuck to those typefaces.

How is this event or lecturer relevant to what your interests are (how does it
influence your own work)?
I realized that while designing I need to be cautious of ‘fad’ types.  I need to design logos that will last, however if I’m designing for an event that only needs the logo for a short time then I can play around with the currently popular types to draw people in.

What are some things you liked/didn't like about the lecture/event?
The fact that skype wasn’t working properly so she couldn’t hear us.

Other comments/opinions?
It could have been planned better.

Here are the notes I took:
  •  Her favorite section of her book is Playing With Friends With Type and her favorite project in the book is Text In the City
  • She prefers the projects that are not in front of the computer
  • Chalkboard type is a trend... it probably won't last
  • Graffiti is like hand lettering, free-flowing
  • She wishes people would come up with their own trends, instead of piggybacking
  • She thinks typography is improving overall
  • Kerning, especially is something everyone should use
  • To get the most out of a class, ask questions.  Look to your instructors as mentors.
  • She misses having like-minded peers to bounce ideas off of
  • take advantage of the things around you while in school, like career services
  • Make sure to always do something on your own so that you don't get frustrated by clients.  always be making stuff for yourself
  • she gets inspiration from her best friends.

Found Typography: Week 5: 7| Sewing Machine

I feel like there is a good use of Typography here.  it's very clean and simple and even though the kerning is very close the text is still easily readable, even from far away.  it definitely reflects the style of the machine as well.

Typographer Trading Cards

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Typographer-Trading-Cards/6586847

I found this while I was looking for packaging ideas for trading cards I'm making in my Digital Theory class, and I thought they were cool.  They remind me of the project we're currently working on in Typography where we're making shirts relating to type designers.

Found Typography: Week 3: 5| Building Front

First of all, the placement of the logo on the building itself is very questionable. Clearly it wasn't thought through properly. Secondly the 'V' is so out of place and just not helping the cause at all. Not to mention that it is placed exactly on the door. It's bein a different color and font set separates it more from the word. Overall, a poor job of typography and of marketing.

Found Typography: Week 3: 4| Wacom Inkling

I find it interesting how the Inkling logo is almost like a progression of type being created.  It's simple in the typeface chosen and yet complex in the execution, which is nice.

Found Typography: Week 2: 3| Giant Name Tag

The tracking is a little awkward on this piece.  Also, the shortness of the bottom of the 'L's makes the word look a bit unbalanced.  Overall it gets it's point across, but could be adjusted and cleaned up a tad.

Found Typography: Week 1: 1| Mug

An example of simplicity, yet with a hint of elegance. Very good use of typography, especially for decorative purposes.
